A high-performing website is not just a collection of well-designed pages. The technical robustness of the foundation, regulatory compliance, and the ability to measure what happens in real conditions determine success far more than the choice of a template or a CMS. Here, we address the technical points that most website creation guides overlook.

Core Web Vitals in field data: why lab tests are no longer sufficient

Synthetic testing tools (Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights in lab mode) simulate a controlled environment. The problem: they do not capture real user interactions. Google now relies on field data collected via the Chrome User Experience Report to evaluate a site’s performance in its search results.

The Interaction to Next Paint (INP) metric illustrates this gap well. A good score in the lab can mask JavaScript latencies triggered only by complex user journeys, browser extensions, or degraded connections. We recommend systematically coupling a RUM (Real User Monitoring) tool with your Lighthouse audits to obtain a reliable picture.

Three technical areas deserve particular attention when creating a performance-oriented website:

  • The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) directly depends on the loading chain of critical resources. Prioritize preloading fonts and the above-the-fold image using the rel=”preload” and fetchpriority=”high” attributes.
  • The Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) can be corrected by reserving space for media (explicit width/height attributes) and avoiding late injection of banners or third-party scripts.
  • The INP is worked on the JavaScript side: break long tasks into microtasks, delegate heavy processing to Web Workers, and audit each event handler.

In practice, a site that shows good lab scores but poor field scores will be penalized in Google rankings. This is a distinction that many web agencies still overlook during the testing phase, where only synthetic tests are executed. Digital accessibility: legal obligations since the European Accessibility Act

Since June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act applies to e-commerce services aimed at European consumers. It is no longer a recommendation for good practice; it is a binding legal framework.

The determining factor is not the size of the company or its sector. It is the site’s ability to allow a consumer to conclude a contract remotely: purchase, reservation, subscription, online payment. A B2B showcase site without online transactions is not automatically subject to the same obligations as a B2C e-commerce site.

What the directive concretely imposes

The user journey must be usable by people with disabilities. This involves rigorous semantic HTML markup, contrasts compliant with WCAG levels, textual alternatives for every media, and complete keyboard navigation.

The site must also publish an accessibility statement and offer a reporting mechanism that allows any user to report a problem. Microenterprises benefit from a specific exemption for certain services, but this exemption does not cover the entire scope.

We observe that the majority of website creation projects still integrate accessibility as a post-launch fix. The effective approach is to integrate it from the wireframe stage: heading structure, tab order, focus management, aria-labels on interactive components.

Content architecture and SEO strategy: structure before writing

The natural referencing of a website starts with its information architecture, not with content writing. A site with a flat or poorly structured hierarchy generates orphan content that Google does not explore effectively.

The maximum click depth between the homepage and any target page should remain low. Each strategic page should be accessible in a few clicks, via a coherent internal linking structure. Internal linking is the most underutilized SEO lever on corporate websites.

Content and search intent

Producing content without mapping search intents is akin to publishing blindly. Before writing, we recommend classifying each target page according to its intent: informational, transactional, or navigational. This classification determines the format (long article, product sheet, structured FAQ) and the appropriate Schema.org markup.

A common pitfall: creating multiple pages that target the same intent with minor keyword variations. Google consolidates these signals and only positions one URL. Keyword cannibalization dilutes authority instead of strengthening it.

Security and hosting: the invisible foundations of a reliable website

The choice of hosting affects performance as much as the code. An entry-level shared server shares its CPU and RAM resources with dozens of other sites. During a traffic spike, server response times (Time to First Byte) explode, and the LCP follows.

On the security side, the HTTPS certificate has been a prerequisite for several years. The overlooked points are elsewhere:

  • HTTP security headers (Content-Security-Policy, X-Frame-Options, Strict-Transport-Security) protect against XSS injections and clickjacking.
  • Automatic updates of the CMS and its extensions reduce the attack surface. Most WordPress site compromises exploit outdated plugins.
  • An external backup policy, regularly tested, ensures business continuity in case of an incident.

These elements are not visible on the screen, but a compromised or slow site in production nullifies all the design and content work.

Creating a high-performing website requires treating performance, accessibility, SEO, and security as design constraints, not as late corrections. A regular technical audit, based on field data rather than lab scores, remains the best safeguard for lasting online presence.
